#IsangDiwa: Making the Filipino Community a Safer Space for Mental Health

WRITTEN BY FRANCESA JANA SANTIAGO

When it comes to mental health, it’s never an easy topic to talk about… especially within the Filipino community. This is because Filipino households don’t openly discuss mental health and when it is, it’s never taken seriously. We’re often told not to think about it or pray until it all goes away but the lack of conversation always adds unto the stigma.

This is what lead the non-profit organization FilExcellence to launch their latest campaign #IsangDiwa which is translated as “One Spirit”. Part of FilExcellence’s mission to empower, elevate and support the global Filipino community is to “lift this dark cloud” from the subject of mental health illnesses and issues- the 3rd most common disability in the Philippines. About 6 million Filipinos live with depression and anxiety and a 2015 review revealed that Filipino-Americans have some of the highest rates of depression among Asian Americans. Through #IsangDiwa, FilExcellence aims to create the largest center and directory dedicated exclusively to the Filipino community.

Here’s how you can help them meet their goals and be a part of the mission!

  1. Sign up as a volunteer or a FilEx Global Mental Health Ambassador and help the team with the coordination of our events & help boost their campaign

  2. Connect them with individuals, groups or organizations that will partner & support their mission.

  3. Donate to them.

  4. Ask them about SPONSORSHIP opportunities.

  5. Share their posts.

The more we dismiss or deny these matters, the harder it is to help the people we care about to heal with what they are going through. Let’s make our personal spaces a safer and more encouraging place for anyone. For more topics that matter in Filipino culture, check out One Down through our official Youtube channel.
