LOS ANGELES (June 21st, 2024) — In its first episode of Trauma Bond, One Down delves deep into triggering topics such as loss, body shaming, and generational trauma. One Down brought two people from the Filipino community to share their raw experiences and emotions.

Trauma Bond’s first episode features mother-daughter duo, Pinky Albea and Tessa Albea, to answer questions about their trauma, unresolved conflicts between the two, and how each of them grew up with their mothers.

After her dad passed away, Pinky spent her whole life with just her mom. She shares that she faced physical trauma growing up with her mom, so she realized she wouldn’t let the same happen to her kids. In the episode, she’s asked “What is the most harmful thing you have told your daughter?” and “Do you think your daughter is happy with herself?”

Her eldest daughter, Tessa Albea, is the VP at Kumu and an advocate for body positivity and self-love. As the eldest of her siblings, when her own dad passed, she recognized that no matter what she wanted to take care of her mom. Tessa says, “What I love in Filipino culture, Asian culture, and Hispanic culture as well, is we are always taking care of our parents. And it’s a life decision. I automatically know I’m including my mom.”

Though she loves her mom, she says the most hurtful thing about their relationship is when she’s told she isn’t “skinny enough or pretty enough or light-skinned enough.” Many of these struggles started when she was younger and in the episode, she tells her mother how she really has felt about it growing up. Tessa is challenged with questions about her mom too, such as “What do you think your mom regrets most about her life?”

Body shaming is a constant trigger within our culture. By bringing together people from the Filipino community to talk about their experiences with their relationships, One Down hopes to empower others to confront their trauma and normalize discussions around mental health.
